When people say that Valve is taking over the world, I tend not to believe them.  Then I hear tell about the D.I.C.E keynote given this week by Gabe Newell and the god of geek movie cred (also known as J.J. Abrams) and their plans for a Portal/Half-Life movie.  Evidently keeping Valve relegated to owning the streaming games market wasn't enough, because now they are poised to take over Hollywood as well.

“We’re super-excited about that, and we’re also excited about working with you guys on a movie. So we’re going to figure out if we can make a Portal movie or Half-Life movie together. But it’s really time for us, and our industries, to stop talking about potentials and start trying to execute them,” Newell said at the end of their presentation.  Looking at the Half-Life universe there's actually great potential for several rather dynamic movies.  The best part about Abrams on the project (other than the fact that everything he touches turns to gold) is that it means that this movie or movies won't just sit on a pitching table, they'll actually see the light of day.  I'm looking at you Warcraft!

The actual summary of the keynote is worth reading, since both Newell and Abrams make valid points about films and games respectively.  It appears they hope to create a new sort of movie experience, one that doesn't frustrate the viewer by, say, never releasing Half-Life 2 Episode 3.
