Australia has always been the odd man out when it comes to video game regulation. Particularly the fact that they have a tendency to censor, or even outright ban, games that have violent or sexual content. This is because the country doesn’t have its own 18+ rating, something that pretty much every other country has had for the past couple decades.

However, all of that seems to be changing. Earlier today, the Attorney Generals of the country have officially voted to institute a R18 category for video games with mature content. This comes with the official backing of NSW’s representative Greg Smith, who abstained from giving his vote a month prior in order to obtain more information on the matter.

“With strong classification guidelines in place, an R18+ rating should result in violent games currently rated MA15+ in Australia being reclassified as adults-only, as they already are in many other countries,” said Smith.

This means that the country of Australia, barring any unforeseen hiccups in the legislation process, will finally be up-to-date with everyone else in the world, and will be able to enjoy video games of all kinds, without having to worry about them being heavily censored or banned. Which is really awesome, because Mortal Kombat 9 is a damn fun game, violence and all.

The measure should hopefully be made official within the next couple months. In the meantime, I’d recommend placing some pre-orders for your games of choice, to get a jump on the impending rush.
