So you're ready to make some steel in Soulmask. Congratulations! You've come a long way from using your Beast Bone weapons to slaughter boars, haven't you? The trouble is, steel isn't like the first alloy you make in the game -- bronze. It requires three components, and mining one of them requires you to trek up in the cold north, and even then it's a bear to find, or rather a mammoth. Fortunately, I've already danced around this bonfire, and I can tell you exactly how to get meteorite ore, the third component you will need to make steel.
Meteorite ore can only be found in specific locations on the map, namely the meteor craters. There are a couple of them spread up in the snowy mountains in the north of the map. To reach them, you will need cold-resist gear and/or food, and enough strength to take down level 60 to 65 creatures. There's one more thing you need to keep in mind if as you plan your mining excursion.
The trick with the meteor craters is that they house elite beasts, much like the mining pits further down south. The one I first encountered had a level 65 elite Mammoth in it, and he was irritated to the extreme that I tried to take his precious metals. You don't have to fight him, perse, you just have to be wily with your dodge button and mine on the other side of the crater from where he is. Now if you're OP, you can totally take out the elites and mine to your heart's content.
To reach the meteor crater field, you travel northwest from the Snow Mountain portal. The craters are scattered all along the ridge from the Frost Pyramid to the south up to the mountain ridge in a sort of sweeping arc. There's a lot of options, but as of 8/24 I do not recommend trying to use the Snow Holy Ruins portal as the devs are being jerks about it and have set a trap for players. When we went up to unlock it, it was camped by two elite hawks and a non-elite mammoth who agroed into the fight when we tried to deal with the birds. After losing two companions, I ninja grabbed the portal and bamfed back to my base. Needless to say, I have not returned.
Maybe by the time you're reading this, they've patched out that madness. Who knows. I just thought I would warn you.
Have you been enjoying Soulmask as much as I have? What is your craziest gameplay story, and is it worse than my Snow Holy Ruins portal experience? Let me know in the comments below.
