Blog Post

It appears that the battle over the name of Mojang's upcoming RPG Scrolls is now over.  Notch reported Friday on the company's blog that they have settled with Bethesda over the trademark issue, and that Scrolls will keep its name, but Bethesda will maintain the trademark for the actual word. As Notch put it, Mojang and Bethesda are friends again, which I guess is a good thing for the industry.

I'm personally impressed with Mojang's flexibility on the matter.  Obviously they just want their game made, but knowing they had a right to make their game and name it what they want, and seeing that they have the guts to compromise with Bethesda's crazy says a lot about the company.  It says that in the end they are not about the money, they are about the art of making games, and still they managed a solution where everyone involved won.  Darn impressive if you ask me.

Let's hope this marks the last time in a while where Bethesda/Zenomax start chasing after their contemporaries waving the legal stick.  They could certainly do with some positive public opinion now, and these sorts of insane lawsuits aren't helping them any.

No release date has yet been set for Scrolls, but now that the lawsuit is over with, no doubt Mojang will be able to get development back on track.  For those interested, you can sign up for the Alpha here.

So does this mean I can start development on The Olden Scrolls: Sky Edge? Because I'm sure Bethesda wouldn't mind that at all...
