Space exploration enthusiast and on-again, off-again game designer Richard "Lord British" Garriott is doing his damnedest to make his voice heard. After lashing out at Blizzard Entertainment and the current state of MMOs a few short weeks ago, he is once again taking the proverbial mic, this time in an interview with Eurogamer. He talks about the "Ultimate RPG" that he is currently working on, and how there is a chance that it could turn out to be a sequel to his venerable Ultima franchise.
"We've actually talked to Electronic Arts about [Garriott leading Ultima Online again]. I would love to have access to the Ultima property. We've had discussions at very high levels with Electronic Arts about access to the property." Garriott states during his interview, later adding, "There are some parts of the organization [EA] that would love and embrace and clearly understand the logic of 'wouldn't it be great to work together on an Ultima'."
For those who may be unfamiliar with the Ultima franchise, the series started off as single player, statistic-focused RPGs during the formation of PC gaming (Ultimas 1-3), then branched off to tell the story of the Avatar of Virtues (Ultimas 4-6) and his struggle against an evil entity known only as The Guardian (Ultimas 7-9) only to be capped off with the lackluster Ultima IX Ascension. The series also produced two highly successful spin-offs, Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 (the first truly 3D exploration RPGs) and Ultima Online, a grandfather of the MMO genre.
Its also important to note that there actually *was* an Ultima Online 2 in the works, many years ago before Origin Systems was liquidated by EA (only to eventually resurrect the company's "origin.com" domain as their new Steam competitor - yes, Im bitter about that). Below is the original trailer for Ultima Online 2, featuring state of the art motion captured animations and what was, at the time, an impressive set of character and monster models.
Well, first of all it's great to see that trailer again. That's an amazing amount of work that was going into those animations.
Second of all, I can't WAIT for the ultimate Garage Sale RPG Garriott is working on. I have my Tag Sale hat all ready and waiting.
