Innovative couch co-op is something that many gamers are looking for, and Paramount Digital Entertainment aims to deliver with recently announced Star Trek. The game's title leaves a little ambiguity as to exactly which trekkie story we are dealing with, but the above screenshot as well as the E3 2011 trailer puts this game squarely in the time stream of the JJ Abrams Bad Robot reboot of the franchise. Developed by Bioshock 2 studio Digital Extremes, Star Trek features a story that bridges the time between the first Star Trek movie reboot and the upcoming movie set to release next year.
We got the opportunity to see the game in action last week during E3, in an impressive session that showed off what Paramount means by true co-op. This isn't your average split-screen experience: Each player sees the story from their character's perspective, including cut scenes and action sequences. The sequence we were shown during the preview showed a hangar bay shoot out where Kirk got wounded, which forced Spock to have to drag him to the sick bay and scan him for toxins. The gameplay varied wildly depending on which character you were following, showing off how each of the characters reacts to situations.
I have to say that what I saw intrigued me. I am far from a Star Trek (the TV show) fantatic, and I am fairly skeptical when it comes to movie tie-in games, but Star Trek (the game) promises not only a unique gameplay experience but also there's the fact that it is based on an original story by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the 2009 Star Trek films, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Look for Star Trek to reach a star system near you in 2012.
