Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, creator of Minecraft, confirmed on his personal Twitter account that the Kinect enabled Minecraft XBLA port will be handled by 4J Studios. While we’re still out to lunch on how the whole Kinect experience is going to translate into are favorite sandbox, we’re glad to see it’s in capable hands. 4J Studios is no stranger to porting PC games to the consoles with credits like Oblivion for the PS3, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Bangjo-Tooie on the Xbox 360. With Minecraft selling over 2.5 million copies now worldwide this entry into what some would call the casual space, we’re sure to see that number climb even higher.
While a port to a major console is great, those users will never know the true power of Minecraft and its community due to Xbox 360’s lockdown on modding. Sadly that means we’ll never see our Xbox brothers and sisters on our PC servers.
I was super excited when they made this announcement back at E3. I would much prefer to be able to play the game cross platform, but just knowing that Minecraft will be available to mobile and now Xbox Live players makes me a happy Mandie.
It will be interesting to see how well the stereotypical Halo player takes to Minecraft.
