What began as an April Fool's Joke is now the talk of the 2012 New York City Toy Fair.  This week Think Geek is unveiling the iCade 8-Bitty, an old school controller for your iOS and Android devices.  It's a wireless game controller that sports a classic D-Pad and button layout reminiscent of retro 8-bit game consoles from the 80’s and 90’s.  The 8-Bitty is battery powered, and connects with your device wirelessly.

The 8-Bitty controls a rather impressive list of hundreds of games, including the entire Atari Classics Collection, Pac Man, and everyone's all time favorite, Super Mega Worm.  Even more impressive is the fact that they are also releasing the API so new game developers can code with the 8-bitty in mind for their next project.

I can't help but smile when I see this little gizmo.  Knowing that you can wirelessly play classic games using the old D pad we grew up with just fills my heart with joy.  The $24.99 price tag isn't that bad considering how much epic gaming can be had with just the push of a button.  Yes indeed, Think Geek is bringing buttons to tablets and smartphones, and I couldn't be happier.

I'd need to get a couple more games off that list first, but I'd sure as hell be down to get me one of those. Do want!

I love gaming on my iPhone, but touch-screen "buttons" have yet to be adequate for action games like Street Fighter 4. I hope the this manages to set a standard for games to use going forward, much like how SoundBlaster did for old DOS games.

My phone has built in slide controls, down side is I lose that if I upgrade the phone. These would be pretty cool to have in my daily travel satchel. It'd go right there with my extra string, a bluetooth adapter, sdcard adapter, multipurpose tool, usb converter, water purifying tablets and more...
