It's been months since BioWare announced that they were throwing in the towel on the subscription model for Star Wars: The Old Republic. This week they finally let us know that their transition to free-to-play would be happening on November 15th. I'm not sure if there is a significance to the date, but there sure is significance to the email I got in my inbox a few days ago telling me I was receiving cartel coins for my previous subscription time.
Now this is a game I will definitely try out for free. It's a solid MMO, as long as you don't expect too much from it, and there's fun to be had. I will reserve my final judgment on their free-to-play version for when I get my hands on it, but as long as they don't punish their free players and instead reward their subscription players, I expect BIoWare will have some decent success with this change. They've got me interested again, and that's saying quite a lot.
Star Wars: The Old Republic goes free-to-play on PC November 15, 2012.
There are a few severe restrictions on the Free2Play accounts, but no where near as bad as EverQuest 2's Free2Play.
After 2 days of downloading this I am finally playing it. Bounty hunter still on prologue. Its pretty fun.
