If there is one game on the horizon that I am most eager to play, it's Guild Wars 2.  I was thrilled therefore when I received word in my inbox this morning that ArenaNet is finally announcing a release date.  I feel confident enough about this game to say that it will change the genre for the better, at a time when MMOs so very much need a good shot in the arm.

So long have people been chasing the dragon (in MMO terms we call that trying to build a WoW killer) that developers have forgotten that they could innovate.  ArenaNet decided that innovation was key, and so they left everyone else to their dragon chasing and instead focused on making a tight, beautiful game -- the game they themselves wanted to play.

Guild Wars 2 will be available for PC on August 28, 2012.  The price for the game (remember there's no subscription fee for this beauty) will be $59.99 for the regular edition, $79.99 for the Deluxe edition, and $149.99 for the Collector's Edition. Those who preorder will get beta access and early access to the game, and considering we didn't get a chance to yet play the Asura or the Sylvari in the beta, that's a pretty decent deal.  You can buy your copy online now, or preorder at your favorite retailer.

Awesomeness incarnate... I will own you. I'm glad they didn't focus on being a WoW killer, most things in general that focus on being a "killer" only end up killing themselves.

I may finally jump into Guild Wars with Guild Wars 2. Passed on the first one as I was way into other games at the time.

Wow killer... that is just I don't know... WILL that ever happen?  There have been so many MMOs to come and go to try and take down the mighty giant that is World of WarCraft.  When Star Wars Old Republic was released I honestly thought that was finally the first MMO that had a chance at toppling the mighty WoW.  I mean this was Bioware after all... but now it looks as if TOR is heading down the path we've all seen before.  Heading towards free to play and then just fizzling away riding off into the sunset.

I honestly think even Blizzard won't be able to beat... Blizzard.  I'm predicting that Titan (whatever the final game is called) won't topple WoW.  Will go as far to say as I don't think any MMO will ever reach the numbers WoW has.  WoW is one of those special games that came out at just the right time and earned the admiration and love of millions of people. It's part of pop culture now.  It's been referenced in tv shows, cartoons, commercials, etc.  You name it.  WoW is just... special.

Anyway... back to Guild Wars 2.  This really does look awesome and something I will keep my eye on!

Guild Wars 2 is definitely more of a PvP game than anything else. Yea it has PvE elements... but it's just... there. Maybe this has changed by now? Still worth a try though.

Mmk scratch what I said. It would appear as if things have changed and they've added plenty of PvE content to the game since the last time i've done my research. It would appear they're embedding PvE features into PvP as well with "PvP dungeons"... perhaps players vs players vs monsters? I wouldn't mind a PvP like that, and I don't like MMO PvP, despite my competitive gaming origins.

I don't enjoy PvP at all. It just doesn't do it for me. But GW2, from what I have seen, is a PvE dream come true. I am looking forward to this game more than any other title this year.

Trust me:  As someone who's played the game three times now and never encountered a lick of forced PvP, this is not just a PK game.  If they have battlegrounds like WoW that is actually a positive for me.  I like having PvE elements in PvP.  Makes me feel like I'm doing something other than getting slaughtered.
