While there wasn’t a new title announcement from Hideo Kojima at this year’s Konami press event, there was a concept announced that sounds like it was made up by a four year old: Transfarring.
Last year, if you recall, Kojima talked a lot about cloud gaming, but was fuzzy on what exactly he meant. Now we know that he is championing the trend of truly cross platform gaming, at least when it comes to handheld and console are concerned. The idea is simple: Be able to play a Metal Gear Solid game on your favorite console, save your game, then upload the game to your handheld and continue playing. As Kojima said in the Pre-E3 video presentation, he wants “people to be able to play their favorite game 24-hours a day.”
While I’m not sure that a world where people do nothing but game is a good thing or not, this new cross-platform gaming model, does sound like a great idea, no matter how silly the name might be. I noticed that the major theme at GDC this year was the idea of cross-platform gaming, and it’s great to see that not only the hardware manufacturers are getting behind the concept, but also the game developers themselves. Its one thing to talk about the ideal, and quite another to put it into practice for use in 2012.
So Transfarring actually exists, and will be featured with the new HD edition of the MGS series releasing this winter. No doubt we’ll hear more about Transfarring from the Kojima camp as we time goes on.
